How to set achievable goals?

Many of us set goals to achieve success in life. But do we set up goals which will really be fulfilled and drive us to work daily towards our goal. Before understanding how to set achievable goals it is important to understand why setting goals is important.

GOALS play an important role in achieving success. Goals give a specific direction to work towards. It is very important to set meaningful and achievable goals if a person wants to achieve success. But most people struggle to set realistic goals and then fail and get demotivated when they do not achieve such goals. Goals should be realistic and not vague. So here I have shared some ways through which you can create realistic and achievable goals to achieve success in your life.

1.Find out the ‘why’

This is the most important task. Discover the reason behind your goal that why you want to achieve this goal. This ‘why’ will become the driving force behind fulfilling your goal and if your why is strong enough you are more likely to work towards your goal. So, spend enough time to find out the reason ‘the why’ behind your goal.

2.Set small goals to achieve bigger goals that you can achieve everyday

It is important to work in small chunks towards your goal. Divide your main goal into various small goals so that you can work daily towards that goal and your brain does not tell you that this goal is far away and that you cannot achieve this. And always and always remember to pat yourself when you achieve those goals and reward yourself and congratulate yourself for taking a step forward towards achieving your goal.

3.Set goals according to your capabilities and strengths

Do not set unrealistic goals for yourself. Set realistic goals which are achievable. Do not just do a thing just because another person is doing it. Analyse yourself and ask questions to yourself that is it that the goal really align with my strengths? and is it really what I want? Introspect yourself and find out your strength and weaknesses and work towards improving yourself. The best way you can do that is through self-reflection and introspection also through writing reflective journal and then analysing yourself.

4.Using a SMART goal technique

SMART goal is a good goal setting framework. With this approach you consider your goal as an action plan. These smart goal helps you to clarify your ideas and focus your efforts and increase your chances of achieving what you want in life.

Specific: Be as specific about the goal as you can be.clarity about your goal will help you in achieving success. For example: I want to become a billionaire then you must be specific about the business that you want to establish.

Measurable: It is very important to set measurable goals so that your progress can be tracked. Measuring your success also keeps you motivated and not only that but also it also keeps the excitement intact of getting closer to your goal. For example: for establishing your business what all skills you have acquired and the experience you have acquired in the field.

Attainable/achievable: As mentioned above goal should be realistic and should match your abilities. It should stretch your abilities but it should remain possible. Also make sure that how realistic your goal is based on other constraints such as financial factors. It should be attainable with current available resources.

Relevant: Acknowledge the practical requirements for achieving your goal. It means goals should be relevant to you. The goal must hold an important value for you.

Timed: Your goal should be time bound so that you can measure your success and stay on track. Set clearly defined timeline including a starting date and target date. Having time constraints creates a sense of urgency and drives the motivation to a particular thing. This will give you reason to work daily to complete your goal and achieve your goal.

5.Make Periodical Adjustments

Always remember that setting goal is a process so always make periodical adjustments. In the process you will find new techniques and maybe some old techniques which are not working in your favour so you can always try new possibilities. So, always be flexible because if you will fix rigid goals, you will feel disappointed and frustrated when you don’t achieve them. Adjustment of the goal should be done if necessary.

Make sure you keep above things in mind whenever you are deciding on a particular goal so that you achieve whatever you want in life. HOPE this helps you set achievable goals.
